What Is Platelet Rich Fibrin?

Platelet rich fibrin is a thick, yellow, and jelly-like material that is a by-product of our blood. It is the second generation of platelet concentration after platelet rich plasma (PRP). In the past, PRP was restricted to hospitals and hematological laboratories due to the high cost of production. Thanks to technological advancements, we can now create PRP and PRF right here in our dental office.

PRF was first developed in France for use in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This biological material has a high concentration of the platelets that activate growth factors. These growth factors stimulate our stem cells during the body’s natural healing process. In other words, PRF is a powerful tool for bone and periodontal regeneration.

The Difference Between Platelet Rich Fibrin and Platelet Rich Plasma

Both PRF and PRP are taken from your blood and separated from most of the plasma in a centrifuge. However, PRF is spun at a slower speed, so the layers of blood do not separate as distinctly as PRP. This allows us to utilize the white cells and stem cells that remain in the platelet layer, resulting in an even more effective by-product.

PRP is spun at a higher speed, causing the heavier cells to collect at the bottom of the test tube. Because PRF is spun at slower speeds, there is a higher concentration of platelets and the other factors associated with tissue regeneration. PRF also requires a smaller blood sample, allowing for easier preparation, application, and lower costs.

The Applications of Platelet Rich Fibrin

Once the PRF is separated from the other parts of your blood plasma, we can use it for many procedures. Some applications include socket preservation, sinus lift, periodontal regeneration, and guided bone and tissue regeneration. The type of procedure you need is dictated by the status of your oral health.

The platelets in PRF play a major role in wound healing. The application of PRF can greatly improve the healing process following one of these procedures. In other words, bone grafting and gum grafting are now much faster processes.

Following tooth extraction, PRF can help enhance the elements of socket preservation. Preserving a socket can help keep your bone healthy enough for implant treatment. This can decrease the length of time between your initial extraction and the placement of an implant. It can also help you maintain a more youthful facial appearance.

PRF does not require an additional appointment. The application of PRF usually takes place during the central procedure. If you need regenerative treatment, platelet rich fibrin is a convenient, safe, and effective way to improve your results!
